I went to the Nordstrom anniversary sale and bought myself a Hugo Boss suit. No, I didn't buy a blazer and "matching" slacks or a pair of separates. I bought a 42 REGULAR suit (with typical 36" waist). And it fits! Yes, I had to get the sleeves shortened and I got the seat let out a bit to make it more comfortable to sit in, but it fit! I'm normal.

But I can easily fit into medium-sized shirts from the Ralph Lauren outlet. Some of them are even a little baggy. That may not mean much to you, but for a guy who six months ago found XXL shirts tight in some cases, it's a big deal to me.

The funny thing is that I feel like I'm getting "punked" in clothing stores. Before, in the rare instances when I went shopping, I would have trouble finding what I wanted in XXL -- all they'd ever have were medium or large-sized clothes on sale. Now, when I go shopping, I can't find a medium, but there are LOTS of XXLs. DOH!

I'd heard for a long time that "yo-yo" dieting would leave you heavier and less fit than before and I myself have used it as an excuse for not trying to lose weight. Well, it looks like scientific evidence now says that's a myth.

And my personal experience would tend to support that. I was talking to my wife and recounting my diet history, only to realize that I've had multiple big diets.

Age 17 - Lost about 40 pounds before going off to college.
Age 21 - Lost about 40 pounds before going off to grad school.
Age 31 - Lost about 40 pounds before moving to California.
Age 36 - Lost about 50 pounds to lower blood pressure.
Now (Age 49/50) - Lost 109+ pounds (so far) to improve health and longevity

Losing weight this time hasn't been any harder than the previous times. In fact, while not easy, mentally it might be easiest as I have the strongest motivation to do so. And I've lost weight about the same way as always, so it hasn't been significantly more difficult now that I'm older.

It's never too late to start...  :)

Went to the doctor today for a follow-up on my June visit and for the first time in forever was told that I don't have to lose weight. All my numbers are fantastic at 189, and she said that I will be just peachy if I stay between 185 and 189.

I think I'll try to lose a little more, maybe down to 175-180 before figuring out how to maintain at a constant weight. Thankfully, given my method, maintenance shouldn't be too complicated -- just a matter of giving myself a few more calories each day. I'm already eating everything, so there's no change in what I'm eating, just a little increase in quantity.

Overall, it's pretty cool. I didn't lose half my weight, but I did lose 37.75% of my body weight in only 206 days. Yes, and that's with going out to eat with friends and travel and my 50th birthday, and a few beers. Sorry to boast -- that's not something I do much, but it's kind of exciting to have accomplished something this ambitious in this short a time.

I'll have a follow up post this weekend listing the 10 most important things I learned from this experience.  I'll also add some before/after pics for some visual motivation.

How food and drink companies use science and statistical methods to create cravings

This New York Times article, The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food talks about how companies create food products that are often unhealthful and incredibly irresistible. It has implications for a diet based on moderation -- some foods are manufactured to be had to resist once you start eating them -- the brain doesn't fire the usual satiety messages.

So what is a calorie-conscious person to do? Smaller pre-packaged portions are one answer, though they can be expensive when bought in that form (you can make your own 100-calorie snacks with some generic zip bags). And, you have to make sure that they're stored in an inconvenient enough place that you don't just grab more than one. Not such an easy task.

Maybe you do need to avoid some foods you like. For me, I know that Fig Newtons are my kryptonite. Whether the box contains 2 cookies or 100, I'll devour them all, in shockingly little time, with seemingly no self-restraint. It's happened many times. So, now, I treat Fig Newtons like a successfully recovering alcoholic treats booze -- I avoid them like the plague. I haven't had a Fig Newton in my house for years. Sometimes I see them at an airport and think of picking up a small pack to take on the plane with me, knowing at least that I won't be able to get any more at 30,000 feet. But, I'm afraid it will rekindle some primal cravings for the product and I skip it in favor of something, almost anything else.

In general, I think eating small amounts of the foods you crave is a good thing -- it keeps you from obsessing about certain foods and the small amounts encourage you to savor ever little bit of the high-calorie foods you enjoy. But I also think it's useful to know what your version of Fig Newtons is and to maybe think about avoiding that in hopes of forgetting/extinguishing those cravings.

Panera Bread Introduces Low-Calorie "Hidden Menu"

We have a Panera Bread outlet near our house, but I haven't been there lately. In the past, when I've checked out their menu, the calorie counts of their menu items have been high enough that I've usually decided to eat elsewhere or make my soup or sandwich at home.

Now, I find out that (maybe I'm late to the party) that Panera has added a new "Hidden Menu" that they test-marketed in NYC and have now spread to all their USA locations (sorry, not yet for Canada). This menu contains six different dishes: 2 "breakfast" items and 4 "salads" that are low carb, and are low calorie, too (which is what captures my interest).

It's a Hidden Menu, so it's not posted in the restaurants, but supposedly, if you tell the counter person that you're ordering a "Hidden Menu" dish, they're supposed to know what you're talking about.

The two breakfast items, Power Breakfast Egg Bowl with Steak (230 calories, 20g protein) and Power Breakfast Egg White Bowl with Roasted Turkey (190 calories, 25g protein) look promising -- you know, I'm a fool for things with more than 1g of protein for every 10 calories.

And the salads, Power Chicken Hummus Bowl (330 calories, 33g protein), Power Steak Lettuce Wraps (280 calories, 28g protein), Power Mediterranean Chicken Salad (360 calories, 35g protein), and Power Mediterranean Roasted Turkey Salad (320 calories, 22g protein) look good, too. Even the sodium's pretty reasonable for those who are watching their salt levels (both of the Steak bowls are 310mg of Sodium). I'm love hummus, so that first item on the Panera list is probably what I'll check out first.

GREAT week at Staples! (2/19/2013 5:37:44 AM):  If you're recycling your ink & rolling rewards/rebates...this week is stellar at Staples! An OP posted a link for the freebie coupons at Staples. Print & use these coupons for a mega-haul at Staples. Trick is to PAY ATTN to which items are rewards & which are rebate. I used my rewards to buy 2 pkgs of photo paper, 1 ream of multipurpose paper, and 1 pkg of Bic Mechanical Pens. I will submit my receipts to Staples and receive the entire amount back in the form of rebate $ cash. Next, I save my rebate/cash to use specifically at Staples. I purchased the 5 packages/reams bundle of copy paper (using the coupon) for $20 and will receive the entire amount back in rewards. I also maxed out the limit on 35ct Lysol Wipes...3x per person and will receive that entire amount back in rewards. It was a huge haul for me as I purchased for our household, business, and my folks. We came away with 30 reams of copy paper, 3 pkgs multipurpose, 6 packets photo paper, 3 pkg Bic Mechanical pens, & 9 pkgs of Lysol Wipes. The entire amount "rolled" with rewards and rebate $ attributed directly to the ink recycling program. THANKS to the OP who first mentioned this program in Jan of 2012 and to the OP this week who posted the link for the coupons.
