Free Sample of ZonePerfect Perfectly Simple Bar

To contact us Click HERE
Here's a nice free sample for you to request.  It's for a ZonePerfect Perfectly Simple bar.  You get to choose between three flavors: Peanut Crunch, Cranberry Almond, or Toasted Coconut.  Can't decide what flavor to try?  If you have other family members with a different email address they can request one too as it's one per person and three per household.  How neat it that!

Just go here to fill out the form.

I Have Seen the Peanut Butter Future and It Is PB2!

To contact us Click HERE

I don't remember how I heard about this stuff, but PB2 is an amazing product. Bell Plantation, makers of PB2, probably using lasers and anti-matter, have managed to remove the oil from peanuts, leaving just a powder. The cool part is that the powder smells and tastes just like peanuts, but with MUCH less fat and calories. Then, they add a little salt and sugar to make it taste just like peanut butter. But this is better peanut butter because it's only 45 calories for two tablespoons. For reference, two tablespoons of Reduced Fat JIF is 190 calories, four times as much!

You just take two tablespoons of powder and mix it with a tablespoon of water and you get a paste that spreads, smells, and tastes just like super-delicious peanut butter. Or, you can mix it right in with a tablespoon of your favorite sugar free preserves for 55 calories of scrumptiousness.

OK, where do you buy it? That's easy and not so easy. Chances are, it's not at your local grocer, at least not yet. I had to buy a jar of it for $6.99 + tax at a health food store/smoothie shop in downtown Seattle. You may be able to save yourself a little money by ordering direct from Bell Plantation's website. You will have to pay UPS shipping, so it's cheaper if you live near Georgia. It's also a little cheaper if you send it to a business address than a residential address, so you might want to send your delivery to work.

And, because I know you'll ask... yes, they have a chocolate version that's also 45 calories and it's kosher.

Here's the full nutritional lowdown on PB2:

My Lunch Needed a Food Stylist

This phenomenon isn't unique to Amy's Light & Lean Spinach Lasagna, but that was today's example.

Here is a comparison of the box to what came out of the box.

Clearly whoever put the cheese on the model lasagna was much more generous than the stingy, calorie-counting bastard who topped mine.

Now on to the finished product after microwaving...

Apparently, the model version didn't fit inside the box, so someone ran it over with a steamroller.

OK, but how did it taste. Pretty unremarkable. Which I guess is better than tasting awful. After a bunch of crushed red pepper it tasted a lot like... crushed red pepper. As a lunch, it was reasonably satisfying, but if it were dinner, I would have been very disappointed.

How many calories are *really* in my cup at Yogurtland?

To contact us Click HERE
It's strange when reality begins to mirror old Seinfeld episodes.

In this case, my curiosity involves the newest hot-spot or frozen yogurt, Yogurtland. If you've never been to a Yogurtland or don't have one near you, you're missing out.

I LOVE Yogurtland! Each shop always offers 10 different flavors of yogurt, and their yogurts are invariably delicious - far better than some recent knock-offs. They also offer a topping bar with a variety of fruits, nuts, candy, cookies, and syrups to complement the yogurt. And, best of all, YOU decide what you want and how much. Grab a cup and fill it or don't fill it to your heart's content -- as many flavors as you want, as many toppings as you want, as much or as little of each. You pay based on the weight, and there's a scale at the checkout counter that tallies your bill.

It's a fantastic place to get dessert and their yogurts are low calorie, and the fresh fruit can be low calorie, too. Of course, even too much of a good thing isn't so smart, but that's not the issue.

You decide on a simple dessert of Vanilla Wafer yogurt, and since the nutrition information is right on the machine ("30 calories per fl. oz."), you decide to get 6 ounces and have a 180-calorie dessert.  You bravely avoid the many seductive toppings (you really should add some blueberries or pineapple -- they're even lower in calories per ounce than even sugar-free yogurts), and arrive at the scale. If you're very clever and/or super nerdy, you know that the smaller of their two big cups weighs 0.75 ounces*, so you're happy when the scale reads 6.75 ounces (6 ounces of yogurt) and you pay the cashier for your yogurt and dig in.

OK, so how many calories is REALLY in your cup. Here's where it gets a little complicated and it's due to differences between weight and fluid measures. You can't just multiply the number on the scale (a measure of weight) and the calories per fluid ounce (listed on the machine and the nutrition chart) to reach the answer.

If you read the fine print on the Yogurtland nutrition chart, you'll see that a serving of yogurt is listed as 1/2 cup (a liquid measure) and it's equivalent 83 grams (a weight measure). So, the really important column of the large nutrition chart is not the first column, "Calories per 1 Fl. Oz." (also listed on each machine), but really the second column which is "Calories per [83g] serving). And for the Vanilla Wafer yogurt, that number is 130 calories.

So, 83 grams of Yogurtland Vanilla Wafer yogurt is 130 calories. How many calories are in 6 ounces as the scale measured? 6 ounces is just a shade over 170 grams, and at 130 calories/83 grams, 6 ounces of yogurt is REALLY 266.26 calories.

Yes, 266 calories is still less than the 300 calories in a Small Hot Fudge Sundae at Dairy Queen, but it's still 47.7% more than the 180 calories you thought you were eating for dessert. And, if you enjoyed this dessert once a week for a year, those phantom 86 extra calories per week would result in an extra 1.25 pounds on the scale.

For the record, this applies to all of Yogurtland yogurts, not just Vanilla Wafer. I usually opt for the No Sugar Added, Non-Fat French Vanilla (listed as 20 calories/fl. oz.) and 6 ounces of that isn't 120 calories, but really 163.8 calories (36.5% higher than I originally thought).

For your convenience, here's the math for all of the standard flavors listed on the Yogurtland nutrition chart (there are almost always special flavors, so you'll have to do those yourself).

Takeaways:
  • Yogurtland yogurt is great tasting and still relatively low in calories.
  • The small cup weighs .75 ounce, so deduct that from your scale reading to know how much stuff you're actually eating.
  • Don't just multiply the calories listed on the machine times the weight on the scale to determine your calorie count for dessert, look at the chart or do the math yourself.
  • If you haven't tried Taro yogurt at Yogurtland, you're missing out. Even better, it is the same calories in the cup as some yogurts listed as only 25 calories/fl. oz.!
  • Fruits/toppings ARE listed per ounce, not fluid ounce, so there's no complicated math involved in toppings -- it's just scale weight * calories/ounce. And some fruits are lower calorie than yogurt (blueberries, and pineapple being just two of them), so enjoy some fruit with your yogurt!
  • For the record, Red Mango yogurts tend to be slightly lower in calories; their lowest calorie yogurts are 80 calories per 93 ounce serving, but I like the greater variety of flavors and ability to control my own portions that Yogurtland provides.
* I've never weighed the large cup, since I don't eat that much at one sitting. The large cup is HUGE! Even the small cup is BIG!

Official Restaurant Nutrition Links

There are lots of unofficial crowd-sourced ways of finding calories in restaurant dishes, but like Wikipedia, sometimes they're accurate and sometimes they're not.

So here is my current list of restaurant nutrition links, as much for my own reference as yours. I'll be updating it over time, so if you don't see what your looking for now, you might in the future. Also, since I live in an area that requires chains of 15 restaurants or more to post nutrition information, I'll include links to my posts from those sources, too.

And yes, I know these are chain restaurants, but I don't know of many smaller restaurants that publish nutritional data.

Cheesecake Factory Skinnylicious(tm) Menu Nutritional Info

Not exactly the first place you think of when you think of "diet friendly", but actually Cheesecake Factory's a pretty nifty place to go on a diet. Their SkinnyLicious(tm) menu, a combination of existing menu items and newly designed items under 650 calories allow you to put together a delicious, filling meal without breaking your calorie budget. Only think I miss on the SkinnyLicious(tm) menu is that i wish it included protein amounts along with the other nutritional info.

My wife and I have been several times and here are our personal perspectives on what we've had.

  • For a tasty pizza fix, split a Margherita Flatbread (165 calories each person).
  • Ahi Tartare is a good appetizer selection, but it's strange that it comes with fried wontons. I skip those to save a few more calories.
  • The Charred Shishito Peppers are mouth-watering, but intense. Their heat ranges from tame to ooh, baby! Also they're very salty, so have a drink nearby. A little goes a long way -- one order will take care of a table for four easily.
  • I LOVE the SkinnyLicious(tm) Spicy Chicken Salad. It's not really spicy, so ask for some Tabasco or alternative hot sauce. But it's delicious and filling. It's actually enough that I usually leave the rice behind to save a few extra calories. I like a lot of food, and this fits the bill. Note: Be careful since there is a Chicken Salad Sandwich, too that you clearly specify that you're ordering the spicy chicken salad, not a sandwich.
  • My wife LOVES the B.B.Q. Chicken (big, flavorful, filling) and the Ahi Tataki Salad.
  • The White Chicken Chili was OK, but didn't really float my boat.
  • My wife and her friend both like that there are burgers of various kinds on the SkinnyLicious(tm) menu, so they can get a satisfying burger fix for under 550 calories.

My Favorite Soy Milk - Westsoy Soy Slender

To contact us Click HERE
I was never a big milk fan as a kid. That's really an understatement. I pretty much hate the stuff. I was raised on 2% milk, so whole milk always made me gag.

Luckily, as an adult, I discovered soy milk. I actually like the taste of real soybeans/soymilk, and the unprocessed, unsweetened stuff can be delicious... but NOT on your morning cereal. The main reason I need milk is for breakfast cereal, so I needed to find something that worked.

I've pretty much tried them all. Non-fat soymilk doesn't work for much the same reason non-fat cow milk doesn't either -- way too watery. Full sweetened soymilk is good, but too many calories for my liking. Eventually, I found my favorite: Westsoy Soy Slender; I like the Vanilla version, but you might prefer the regular kind.

What's great about it?

  • Great taste -- sweet, creamy, and delicious. NOTE: serve it cold! If you try to drink it at room temperature, it's nasty.
  • Low calorie - 70 calories/cup and I only need a 1/2 cup for my cereal. It's sweetened with Splenda, so those of you artificial sweetener avoiders should check out the WestSoy Plus Vanilla (only 15 more calories per half cup).
  • Shelf-stable - I can buy it when it's on sale and store the extras in the garage, not in the refrigerator. Yes, I'm a cheapskate with a crowded fridge.
  • 6-7 grams of soy protein, 33 mg of isoflavones per 1-cup serving.
You may have trouble finding Soy Slender at your local market -- some of ours carry the product (QFC/Kroger does), some don't (Safeway, Whole Foods), but you can buy it online. The price is OK, nothing special -- $3.60 to $3.80 per quart -- I paid $2.79 yesterday at my local QFC (not on sale).

Diet + Exercise = Success

Deciding you're going to lose a lot of weight by either only dieting or only exercising doesn't make a lot of sense. To get the most bang for the buck, you're going to need to do both.

I'll talk more about exercise in a later post, but I was just reading a Lifehacker post, "10 Stubborn Exercise Myths that Won’t Die, Debunked by Science". It seemed like that might be something useful for those of us trying to work out and eat better.

My hour with a nutritionist

To contact us Click HERE
At the smart recommendation of my personal trainer, I scheduled an hour session with a nutritionist. The time was very worthwhile and while she said I was doing some things right, she pointed out some opportunities for improvement. And I liked the fact that she's a science-based nutritionist and not just someone who's listening to their body or the imaginary voices inside their head.

So, what did she say?
  • You need to eat before you workout, and you need to do it 90-120 minutes beforehand. It reminded me of the old adage about waiting after a meal before swimming, but here the issue isn't cramps, it's giving your body time to process what you ate and turn it into usable energy. What should I be eating beforehand? Mostly carbs -- my breakfast of cereal and soy milk works just fine as long as I eat it at the right time.
  • You need to eat after a workout. Again, not earthshaking news, but I was surprised about what I should be eating afterward. I had read somewhere on the internet (always a dangerous thing) that one should eat protein after a workout. So, I've been chowing down on near pure-protein post-workout meals. WRONG. Protein after a workout is good, but your body needs carbs to. A ratio of 4:1 carb grams to protein grams is about optimal. Sounds like it's time for a sandwich or perhaps some toast with my after-exercise eggs.
  • You need to eat back *some* of the calories you burn during exercise. After giving me a rough estimate of the calories I'd need to eat to lose 2 pounds/week without exercise, she said I should probably add to that half of the calories I burn during exercise. She was also wise in noting that the calorie counts on many fitness machines are wildly inaccurate, so it's important to be conservative. essentially, she said it's good to think of your budgeted daily calories as coming from two pools -- one is the standard base pool that you get just for waking up in the morning and going about your business and the other comes from exercise above and beyond that. No extra exercise, no extra calories.
  • Soluble fiber is important and she told me about a really odd source of high quality soluble fiber -- orange rind. Really. I'm not pulling your leg. No, she didn't tell me to start eating orange peel. What she did say was to switch from Mandarins to Navel Oranges, cut them into eighths like you did when you were a kid, and eat them down to and including a little bit of the pith. I tried it today and not only was the orange sweet and juicy, but a little pith didn't hurt.
  • You've got to get enough fats, and since you're not eating too many fats, get good ones. She recommended expeller-pressed canola oil or olive oils for cooking. She also recommended raw nuts -- apparently roasting manipulates the fat in nuts so it loses some of its goodness.
  • Finally, she gave me a lesson on label reading and ingredient lists. She's a big fan of avoiding processed foods. I don't know if I'm quite as gung-ho as she is, but it made some sense. Especially when the calorie difference between a product with a lot of artificial stuff and one with little is very small. I'm thinking of changing soy milks to one without Splenda (only 20 calories difference for what I'm putting on my cereal) and I bought some strawberry preserves today that was 35 calories per tablespoon instead of the 10 calories/tablespoon version using Splenda to sweeten.
It was a really worthwhile session. TIP: Good nutritionists can be EXPENSIVE, so know what you want to ask before you come in and use your time wisely.

Happy 50th Birthday to me!

To contact us Click HERE
I've been pretty neglectful in posting lately, but I have been very focused on my health improvement lifestyle changes. So where am I at this milestone? I've been at it for just over four months, and the good thing is that my definition of "normal" has changed. Daily exercise is normal. Not overeating is normal. Being aware of the nutritional content of what I'm eating is normal. This is good. Exercise and good eating have gone from being aberrations to becoming habits.

As of my 50th birthday, I am now down 77 pounds (35kg) in four months of work! Big difference. Where XXL was often too tight, I am now wearing L in polo shirts. My waist is down 8+ inches. I have the beginning of some visible abdominal muscles. My blood sugar has gone from slightly elevated to normal. My blood pressure is normal with no medication. Despite my fast weight loss, my uric acid levels are normal, so I'm not in gout danger.

I've still got quite a way to go, but the results to date are encouraging. I had originally hoped to be down 94 pounds in just under 11 months and I'm down 77 in just four. And this, at age 50.

What's the secret? The secret is there is no secret. Exercise daily. I either walk on an incline on the treadmill or work out on an elliptical trainer daily and I lift weights about three days a week. No running for me -- I'm still over 220 pounds, so I want to take care of my knees and other joints. I journal *everything* I eat. I'm not crazy about it -- if I don't have an exact number, I'll estimate. But I am very aware of everything I put in my mouth. I haven't deprived myself of anything; I eat out, I'll pick up a pizza, I'll have a beer, I just don't overdo it when I do indulge. Who knew that dinner at Ruth's Chris could be a pretty low-cal (and delicious) meal. I don't fall for any fad nutrition -- it doesn't matter when I eat and I try to eat a balanced diet while trying to opt for less-processed foods when I have a decent choice.

Today I received another free sample of Perky Jerky.  I'm not sure why I got this sample but it might of been because I filled out the form on their Facebook fanpage.

By the way, I'm kind of torn if I should keep this sample for myself since I really liked the last one I got or keep it for my sister.  Last week she told me how much she really liked the sample and she wants more.  So I'm not sure what I want to do.

On February 4th, I request a free sample of Perky Jerky by email and on April 10th, I received my sample of the beef flavor (0.5 oz).  It look like you can still request a free sample of Perky Jerky on Facebook. Just go "like" them on Facebook and request your sample there. You even get to choose between beef or turkey.

Please realize what they state on their Facebook page, "Samples are available as long as supplies last. Requesting a sample does not necessarily ensure you will receive one. We will do our best to try to fill as many requests as possible." By the way, I do not know if emailing them anymore will work to get a free sample as stated below.

As stated on Perky Jerky's Facebook info page, "Perky Jerky is made by Performance Enhancing Meat Snacks Inc (PEMS), in Colorado. Please send your sample request to info@perkyjerky.com."
